Alex Jacobsen, MA, LPC
Hi, I’m Alex and with my education and therapeutic experience I’ve spent almost a decade immersing myself in trying to understand the actions, behaviors, and feelings of others in an effort to help people better understand themselves.
I received my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Sam Houston State University, my undergrad in Psychology from UT Dallas, and have been working in the field for almost four years now. I have a somewhat unique background: I’ve lived all over the world! I’ve lived in Dubai, Denmark, Taiwan, Korea, Virginia, South Carolina, and now Texas where I have spent most of my life. I have also visited countries in every continent except South America and Antarctica (maybe one day!). Visiting other countries has given me the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of individuals from different cultural backgrounds, allowed me to challenge my assumptions about the world, and reflect on the values I hold which affects how I interact with others. I believe these lessons have taught me from a young age how to empathize and connect with others which has been an invaluable skill as a therapist.
My Approach
My view of therapy is also unique. I approach therapy from an existential perspective which means I believe that most problems we face are primarily driven by our deepest fears: fears of dying or of others dying, being lonely and isolated from others, facing the consequences of our actions, or lacking meaning and purpose behind what we’re doing. All the problems we face in daily life can be explained by one, if not multiple, categories and allows us to approach therapy in terms of empowering ourselves to overcome our fears. This means that much of my approach is about positivity, finding what we do or don’t have control over, and - once you’re ready - helping you stick to the goals and desires you have for yourself!
Who are you?
I work with individuals feeling stuck, lost, or disconnected, struggling with anxiety, trauma, depression, grief, identity issues, or addiction. I also help those seeking to better understand themselves and their inner world.
